First Stop - Denpasar

Most travellers on their way to Nusa Penida will enter Bali through the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar which is located on the southern tip of Bali. Getting to Bali nowadays is straightforward due to the number of airlines flying in from major international cities:

Nusa Penida is only 30 minute boat ride from Bali

From North America

Airlines offer flights from Los Angeles (LAX) and New York (JFK) with layovers in Hong Kong, Singapore, or Doha.

From Europe

Travelers from Europe will find connecting flights at both London (LHR) and Paris (CDG) with travel times between 16 to 20 hours.

From Asia

Many flights come in from Tokyo (NRT) and Beijing (PEK) via major carriers. Flight durations are typically 7 to 9 hours.

From Australia

Direct flights from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne taking about 6 hours make Bali a favored destination for Australians.

From Africa

Travel from African cities connect in Doha or Dubai and will take between 18 to 24 hours.

From South America

Similarly, lights from South America route through European or Middle Eastern hubs taking the same amount of time.

Arrival in Bali

In most cases on arrival at Denpasar you can buy a visa but its easier to get one before leaving home to save time and money at the airport. There are several agencies online that will organize your visa but its best (and cheaper) to go through the government website here Ministry of Law and Human Rights. Directorate General of Immigation

Customs declarations, also available online here, are required upon entry. If required, custom declarations can be filled in at booths near the baggage carousels.

  • Apply for visas online and pre fill-in the customs declaration.
  • Book flights and accommodation well in advance, especially during peak seasons (April to September).
  • Consider travel insurance and routine vaccinations for health and safety.

Denpasar to Nusa Penida

Getting to Nusa Penida involves a combination of land transport and a short sea crossing.

Getting to the Port

Travel from Denpasar to Sanur Beach takes about an hour and is the most convenient port for passengers only. Taxis, private cars and ride-sharing services are all available. The larger ferries to Nusa Penida leave from Padang Bai (54 km, 2-3 hours).

Taking the Ferry

From Sanur Beach, passenger only speedboats or fast ferries take around 30 minutes. From Padang Bai, larger ferries take about 1 hour. Again, book tickets in advance, especially during peak seasons.

Arriving in Nusa Penida

Ferries from Sanur arrive at Banjar Nyuh port, while those from Padang Bai dock at Sampalan port. Both ports are about the same distance from Villa Treetop. To get here you can hire a scooter, get a taxi or arrange a private car.
